Why Do Candles Tunnel and How to Fix It

There is nothing more disappointing than lighting your favorite CELUXE candle and watching it burn straight down the center, leaving thick walls of unused wax around the edges. This common issue is called candle tunneling, and the good news is it is completely fixable.

If you love luxury home scents, understanding how to prevent and fix candle tunneling will help you get the most out of every candle.

What Is Candle Tunneling

Candle tunneling happens when only the wax directly around the wick melts while the outer edges remain solid. Instead of forming a full melt pool across the surface, the candle burns downward in a narrow tunnel.

Over time, this creates wasted wax, reduces scent throw, and shortens the lifespan of your candle.

Why Do Candles Tunnel

The number one reason candles tunnel is not allowing the wax to melt fully across the top during the first burn. Candles have memory. The first burn sets the pattern for future burns. If you blow it out too soon, the wax will continue to melt only within that small circle each time you relight it.

Other common causes include

Burning your candle for too short a time

Using a wick that is too small for the candle diameter

Drafty rooms that create uneven heat distribution

Poor quality wax or improperly formulated candles

At CELUXE, we carefully test our candles to ensure optimal wick sizing and clean, even burns. But even the best candles require proper care.

How to Fix Candle Tunneling

If your candle has already started tunneling, do not worry. You can restore it.

Use the foil method

Wrap aluminum foil around the top of the candle, leaving an opening in the center for the flame. Light the candle and let it burn for one to two hours. The trapped heat will melt the hardened wax along the edges and reset the surface.

Use a heat tool carefully

A heat gun can gently melt the top layer of wax to even out the surface. This works quickly but should be done with caution.

Scoop and reset

If tunneling is deep, you can carefully remove some excess wax from the sides to allow the flame to reach a wider area.

How to Prevent Candle Tunneling

Prevention is always better than repair.

Allow the first burn to last long enough for the entire surface to melt evenly. This usually takes one hour per inch of candle diameter.

Trim your wick to about one quarter inch before every burn. This helps maintain a steady flame and proper melt pool.

Keep candles away from fans, open windows, and air vents to avoid uneven burning.

Avoid burning for more than four hours at a time to maintain wax integrity and safety.

Why Proper Candle Care Matters

When you invest in luxury candles, you want the full sensory experience. Proper candle care enhances scent throw, extends burn time, and keeps your space looking beautiful.

At CELUXE, we design our candles and diffusers to elevate your everyday rituals. With the right care, your candle will burn cleanly and evenly from the first light to the final glow.
